On January 20, 1526 Santiago left Lisbon bound for Africa with a cargo of copper and tin bracelets, round bells, barber pools and tissue; to the beginning of October, the ship returned to Portugal with very different loads, 108 enslaved Africans. With frightening detachment Ship # 226; # 8364; # 8482, S shopping magazine writes commodification of human beings, the prices paid for them, the amount received for their sale and the number of those who did not survive the transition. While this magazine may be very rare, it is clear from another document, save the receipt book Customs Portuguese islands of Cape Verde, that such travel were common in the early years of the sixteenth century. The bulk of this amount is made up of the English translation of the book of receipts of customs Cape Verde Islands. It recorded a Portuguese customs import duties on more than 3,000 slaves transported from the surrounding West Africa in 36 ships. Customs officers named slavers, ships, officers, crew and ships Outfitters, as well as the cost of each slave and import duties collected by the Portuguese government and the Catholic Church. The second part of the customs of the book contains detailed information about the export tax paid on c.600 African slave traders from Portugal, Spain and the Spanish Canary Islands, where they exchanged European goods for slaves. In the last chapter of volume translates Santiago # 226; # 8364; # 8482; s journal, providing an example of a real slave trade expedition. Together, these documents open a rare window into the workings and scope of early Atlantic slave trade.
