In spite of the recent history of violence and destruction, Bosnia and Herzegovina has a positive place in history, marked by the continuous interweaving of different religious cultures. The most expansive period in this context is the Ottoman rule, which lasted nearly five centuries here. Since many Bosnians converted to Islam, Islamization process took different directions and meanings, only some of which are recorded in official documents. This book emphasizes the importance of material culture, such as tombstones, grave inscriptions and images, tracking and understanding the more subtle changes in Bosnia # 226; # 8364; # 8482; s religious landscape and the complex of cultural shifts and exchange between Christianity and Islam in this area. Tombstones are considered as cultural space that fits the memory, history and heritage in addition to the text that appears in images and words, first-hand information about the victims. In addressing these issues and ideas, the research is in the range of several contextual, theoretical and methodological foundations.
