The reign of Mary Tudor is the period when, for a short period of time, early modern European state tried to turn the religious policy of the previous government. This required the use of persuasion and coercion, propaganda and censorship, as well as the controversial decision to revive the old statutes against heresy. Attempts to renew the Catholic mass and revive Catholic education and spirituality were strongly opposed to a small but determined group of Protestants who sought ways to thwart the return of Catholicism. The struggle between those who want to upgrade Catholicism and those who choose to resist it raged for a full five years of the reign of Mary. This volume brings together eleven authors from different disciplines (English literature, history, divinity and history books) that explore the different policies adopted to ensure that Catholicism could flourish once again in England. clergy and public safety at Mass is of paramount importance, as sporadic riots have taken place in the early stages. Measures have been taken to ensure that the Reform liturgy has been stopped, and that the country once again embraced the Catholic practice. This included a series of short-term and long-term plans, to be adopted by the regime. They included purging universities of reformist ideas and support (re) education as laity and clergy. On a broader scale, it was made with the help of the pulpit and the press. Those who oppose the return to Catholicism did it in different ways. Some have gone into exile, while others chose the press to voice their objections, since the amount of information. Answers to this mode of action of individuals and clandestine texts prepared by their opposition to come under scrutiny throughout this volume. The work presented here also offers a new understanding of the role of King Philip and his Spanish advisers. Thus, these essays represent a detailed assessment of the role of the Spaniards who came to England as a result of the marriage of Philip and Mary. They also move away from the ongoing discussions "persecution", seeking rather to a more subtle understanding of the regime attempts to renew and revive the nation of believers, and to eradicate the disease of heresy. They are also looking at ways in which these attempts are opposed by individuals at home and abroad, thus providing a large-scale but detailed assessment of how to update the Catholic and Protestant resistance during the years of 1553 # 226; # 8364; # 8220; 1558.
