At the beginning of the modern world, botany was a big science and big business, critical to national and commercial ambitions of Europe. Tracing the dynamic relationships between plants, peoples, states and economies over three centuries, this collection of essays offers a living challenge to historiography, which emphasized the rise of modern botany, taxonomy and how the story of "pure" classification systems. The contours of the new map botany along colonial origin, coming from Europe to the New World, India, Asia and other points on the globe, Colonial Botany explores how research, naming, cultivation and sale of rare and beautiful plants as a result of, and shaped the European voyages of conquest, world trade and scientific research.
From the earliest geographical discoveries, naturalists sought lucrative factories for King and country, personal and corporate gain. Expensive spices and valuable medicinal plants such as nutmeg, tobacco, sugar, quinine, pepper, cloves, cinnamon, tea and occupies a prominent place among the motives for the European Discovery. At the same time, colonial profit largely depends on the natural history of exploration and accurate identification of viable and effective cultivation of plants. This volume opens up new horizons, considering the development of the science of botany in its colonial context and possessing Early Modern study of flora in the volatile weave science, commerce and public policy.
Written by scientists as international as their subjects, Colonial Botany reveals emerging cultural history of plants and botanical practices in Europe and its possessions.
