Since 1905, a large number of Greek Dodecanese Islands and the Saronic Gulf settled in Tarpon Springs to work in the sponge business. They greatly expanded the industry and Tarpon Springs changed forever. Greektown flourished houses, shops, churches, restaurants, and leisure and entertainment, ranging from sponge docks to the city center. Sponge fisheries and related activities served as an economic base for the community. By 1913, at least half the people in Tarpon Springs were supposedly Greek, and many companies are shown as Greek and American flags. Today, Tarpon Springs' Greek community retains strong ethnic and naval heritage. While some large American cities have a larger Greek population, no one else has a higher percentage of Greek heritage than Tarpon Springs.
