Why and how certain acts of mass mobilization trigger protest while others do not? Using the cases of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, Mekouar argues that the successful mass mobilization is the result of the surprise factor, whose influence and exclusivity is enhanced by the presence of powerful political agents in the early phase of the protest, as well as the regime of violence and unusual media coverage. However, this study argues that these factors create a sense of exclusivity, which destroys cognitive heuristics locally available initially in favor of the regime, and, thus, creates the necessary conditions for mobilizing occur. This book presents a unique picture of the dialectical mobilization in North Africa, focusing both on the point of view of those who mobilized against their own local conditions and the security forces who were responsible for stopping them. In addition, it offers a first-hand report on the tumultuous days preceding the collapse of the authoritarian and explains the mechanisms by which the political changes taking place.
