First published in 1992, this book analyzes the social security in eight of the socialist countries, at that time, Czechoslovakia, China, Cuba, Hungary, Poland, Yugoslavia, North Korea and the Soviet Union. For each country it considers ideological framework underlying the social security system and describes the historical development of a system and the political and socio-economic context. Each chapter is devoted to the structure and administration of the system in one place, and how they are funded. This is followed by taking into account the nature of the various parts of the social security system, social security survey, personal social services and the treatment of the following main target groups: the elderly; persons with disabilities and disadvantages; children and youth; dysfunctional families; unemployed; and the sick and wounded. Each chapter concludes with an assessment of efficiency of the system.
