Phased power in Tudor and Stuart English history play explores the changing ideological concept of sovereignty and its representation on the stage at the State Theatre during the Elizabethan and early Stuart period (1580-1642). The study examined the way in which the early modern stage presented a critical dialogue about the nature of sovereignty through the prism of specifically British history, in particular the presentation and representation of the monarchy. It is a subgenre of stories of the English game as a specific response to the surrounding political context can interact with and influence the popular and elite conception of the monarchy and the government. This project is the first of its kind, namely the place early modern discussion of sovereignty in the dramatic context of "mass culture"; its purpose is not only to provide a historical timeline of the English political theory pertaining to the monarchy, but to arrange the drama as a significant influence on the production and distribution of them in the Tudor and Stuart periods. Some of the plays discussed here, especially those of Shakespeare and Marlowe, widely and thoroughly studied. But others such as Edmund Ironside, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and King John and Matilda, were not previously the focus of much critical attention.
