Read or Download PDF book Eurasian path of war: military practice in the seventh century, China and Byzantium -

This book is a comparative study of military practice in the Sui-Tang China and Byzantium between about 600 and 700 CE. It covers all aspects of the art of war of weapons and combat tactics to logistics, the organization of the campaign, the military institutions and the general strategy of the empire. While not ignoring the many differences between the Chinese and the Byzantines, this book emphasizes the striking similarities in their organizational structures, tactical deployment, and primarily its extremely cautious approach to the war. This shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom Positing simple Western way of war and "Eastern" approach is characterized by avoidance and deception, the specificity of the Byzantine military practice in the seventh century differed little from what has been known in China Tang. He argues that these similarities can not be explained by diffusion or general cultural influences that have been limited, but instead because of the need to deal with the common challenges and confront common enemies, such as the nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppe. In general, this book provides compelling evidence that the pragmatic needs can have a greater impact than the deep cultural imperatives in determining the company # 8217; s "path of war."
