Australian by birth, but a longtime resident David Lumsdaine (b.1931) is central to both Australian and British modernism. In the early 1970s, the Australian musical modernism was at altitude. Lumsdaine and his Australian contemporaries engaged with practitioners from multiple locations, creating music that reflects the attributes of their disparate influences; at the same time, they formed a new concept of what it means to be an Australian composer. The period is just as important in the UK, because it saw the rise of composers such as Birtwistle, Davies, Goehr, Gilbert, wood, card and many others who were Lumsdaine contemporaries, colleagues and friends. Hooper is here a series of tests Lumsdaine compositions, focusing on works written in the period from 1966 to 1980. At the beginning of the end of this period Kelly Ground, for solo piano. One of the first works of recognized Lumsdaine, Kelly Ground connects clearly with the music of high modernism, using the ideas of the time, which supported Ligeti, Stockhausen and Boulez, to form a new ritual (now mythical) Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. Hooper puts Lumsdaine music in the context of Australian and British avant-garde, and reveals its elegance, lyricism and technical virtuosity.
