In late antiquity, the emergence of Christian asceticism into question the traditional Greco-Roman attitudes and practices of family life. Final deliberations on the right way to live a good Christian life, give us a wealth of information about both ideological statements and living experience of the late Roman childhood. This is the first book to thoroughly investigate the relationship between the family, children and asceticism in the rise of Christianity. Based on the texts of the late fourth and early fifth century Christian writers volume approaches to the study of family dynamics and children from both ideological and social historical perspectives. It examines the place of children in the family in the Christian ideology and explores how family at the end of the Roman world to adapt these ideals into practice. Offering a fresh viewpoint in modern science Ville Vuolanto shows that there was a lot of continuity in the Roman ways of thinking about children and, despite the rise of Christianity, the old traditions were deeply rooted in the culture. In addition, discussions about family and children, shows were closely linked to concerns about the continuity of the family line and myself, and to the changing understanding of what constitutes a meaningful life.
