Sports are ubiquitous in American society, and because of their popularity in culture, it is easy to understand how the majority of young people in the United States face pressure to participate in organized sports. But what does this mean for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who live with one or more disabilities and, in particular, those in wheelchairs powered? Located at the intersection of sport and disability, this book talks about the power football - the first competitive team sport specifically designed for electric wheelchair users. Beginning in France in 1970, today more than sixty teams compete under the power of the United States Football Association (USPSA) and sport actively played in more than thirty countries. Using ethnographic research conducted during a visit to practice, games and social features teams from all over the country, Jeffress builds a strong case that the electric wheelchair users deserve more opportunities to engage in sports. They deserve it because they are in need of the same physical and psychological benefits of participation as their peers, which make full use of their arms and legs. He challenges social structures and barriers that currently stand in the way. Most importantly, this book talks about some of the amazing power of football athletes. This movement, first-hand what it means to them the power of football and the implications for society.
