In his writing entertaining and original book, Scott Carpenter analyzes the multiple manifestations of the false nineteenth-century France. Under the careful and systematic analysis Carpenter, fraud acts as a cultural concern in the literature and the society of the nineteenth century, whether in the form of literary hoaxes thematic portrayal of fraud or falsity of the privilege as an aesthetic principle. Focusing particularly on the aesthetics of duplicity in the works of M # 233; Rim # 233; ie, Balzac, Baudelaire, Vidocq, sand and other Carpenter puts these literary representations in the context of other cultural phenomena, such as cartoons, political history and celebrations. As he emphasizes the special relationship between fiction and falsehood, Carpenter argues that the falsity appears as an aesthetic preoccupation in post-revolutionary France, where it enters the blurring of boundaries between the categories of digital still. This trespass problems notions of authenticity and sincerity, category, romantic aesthetics advocated in the early nineteenth century in France.
