Early Republican era (1923-1938) was a period of major musical and cultural changes in Turkey. Alaturka: Style in Turkish music is to study the importance of style in Turkish music, and in particular, the polemical debate on the oriental style of Turkish music (so-called, Alaturka), which developed in the course of this rich and complex era of Turkish history. Representing more than twenty years of research, the book explores the stylistic categories that show the intersection between music and culture; various chapters treat musical material, musical practices and musical context in turn. Reported critical approach to musical aesthetics in ethnomusicology and musicology and anthropology, the book focuses on the native discourse about musical style, emphasizing the contemporary fears of the relevant national identity constitution. The dispute over the style reveals the competing concepts of the Turkish space and time, where the definition of the east and west, and the interpretation of past and present, respectively, have been hotly contested. John Morgan O'Connell makes a significant contribution to the study of Turkish music, in particular, and Turkish history in general. Conceived as a historical ethnography, the book combines archival sources and ethnographic materials to provide a critical review of the Turkish historiography of music, providing a locus interviewing special presentation of the national past.
