Like anywhere else, the modern Islamic world, too, is struggling with modernity and postmodernity, secularization and globalization. Muslims raise questions about religious beliefs and powers. This led to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses that challenge the binary oppositions and dichotomies orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. This also leads to the dissipation of power, the collapse of the existing hierarchies and gender roles. This book further alleges that the center of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourse moves from the Arabic "heartland" in the direction of the geographical periphery of the Muslim world and Muslim expatriates in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the balance of political forces in the Middle East that are discussed in this book trends hold important clues to the future possible direction of developments in this volatile part of the Muslim world.
