Americans in Africa seeks to convey the various perspectives on “Black Experience” in the United States and its controversial history. This volume, slavery and its consequences are discussed four main issues: the extent of African influences on the lives of those who enslaved and brought to America, beginning with an essay on “Africanisms in everyday life” by Herskovits; the impact of slavery on personality and social structure, sometimes called “Elkins Debate;” similarities and differences in the lives of African Americans in the South and in the North; and community issues, class and family, including the full text of “Moynihan report” and some pointed criticism. In addition to comments on the works and Herskovits, Elkins, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Volume I, other authors include Kenneth B. Clark, Mina Caulfield Davis, E. Franklin Edwards, Eugene Genovese, by Ulf Hannerz, Charles S. Johnson, Leroy Jones, and Charles Keil. The second volume, old memories, new mood, contains essays about the roots of black protest; background and the nature of the civil rights movement; the interpretation of the influence and significance of the Black Power and a variety of views on the changing self-esteem to be African American.
