This volume unpacks how the manipulation of space and design in the border areas, historically as well as today, laid the groundwork for specific types of interactions and to convey the meaning of these sites and the experience that they embody. The border zone will organize a variety of functions to facilitate the passage of goods, information and people, as well as to identify and access control. By combining the study of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North America, a collection of essays casts a wide net to see the boundaries of different varieties. Studies of modern political boundaries are set in the context of historic survey boundaries, boundaries that existed in the cities, as well as virtual boundaries.
