In a globalizing world, the border may be in motion, but they remain as great as ever. New boundaries are established even in the old boundaries blurred. In addition to the lines on the maps, however, the boundaries of the spatial area in which the distinctive architecture, graphics and other design elements that are deployed to indicate the nature of space and maintain, if not actually control the behavior and social relations within it. This volume unpacks how the manipulation of space and design in the border areas, historically as well as today, laid the groundwork for specific types of interactions and to convey the meaning of these sites and the experience that they embody. The border zone will organize a variety of functions to facilitate the passage of goods, information and people, as well as to identify and access control.
