Organ, piracy and Captivity in colonial Spanish American writing explores the complex relationship between poetry and story writing, which formed the theory and practice of empire in the early colonial Spanish-American society. The book explores a variety of points of view, as an epic and heroic poetry served to interpret the new Spanish-American elite, the original researchers and conquistadors in the Juan de Castellanos’S Elegy illustrious men of India. In addition, this book offers an interpretation Castellanos’s works that shows his critical engagement with the reformist project postulated in Alonso de Ercilla’s LaAraucana, and it clarifies the complex poetic discourse Castellanos, created to protect the interests of the young generation of explorers and conquistadors in the period after the publication of new laws and mounting criticism Encomienda Institute.

In the broader context of a new poetics of imperialist expansion, this book shows how the elegy offers one of the earliest examples of a reconfiguration of some basic principles Petrarchism / Garcilacism, as well as bold transmutation dominant poetic discourse, which had until then was not, as a rule, is associated with nobility. Focusing on the practice of poetic imitation (imitatio), and the power, and the captivity of piracy, this book shows the transformation undergone by the heroic poetry of Europe’s meeting with the United States and shows the contribution of the scientist to the emergence of the heroic verse of the Spanish-American literary tradition.
