This book offers the first systematic comparative analysis of military education and training in Europe in the context of post-Cold War security environment. Based on the analysis of military educational institutions in the UK, Germany, Finland, Romania and the Baltic countries, this book shows that the convergence of European military culture from the end of the Cold War is associated with changes in the field of military education. convergence process takes place, at least in part, from the total or partial acceptance of the new concept of post-commissioning of professional military educational institutions: National Defense University. Officers are now formed a number of civilians and government officials, in which they enjoy the experience of socialization, which is markedly different from previous generations of European officers, and increasingly similar across national boundaries. In addition, this book argues that the control over the curriculum and graduation criteria is largely determined by civil higher education authorities, European armed forces, continuing to exist and retain a significant (though declining) capabilities, can lose its status as a profession in the the traditional sense of the word. This book will be of great interest to students of military, European security policy, European policy, and IR in general.
