Old-French chanson d'Antioche has long intrigued historians and literary critics. Unusually among epics, it is closely monitoring the well-documented historical event - the First Crusade - and appears to include a significant and genuine historical content. At one time it was thought to be based on the account with the help of an eyewitness, "Richard Pilgrim". Carol Sweetenham and Susan Edgington have teamed up to investigate such claims and conclusions set out in the comprehensive introduction, which, firstly, examines the text of the poem history of its possible oral start after several repeated development in its current form, achieved at the beginning of the thirteenth century . The second chapter assesses Chanson value as a source for the crusade, and the third considers his status as a literary text. Full translation of prose follows the first in English and based on the final version. Chanson is revealed as a living story, with tales of chivalry, meanness, and even episodes of humor. There are extensive notes to the translation, as well as the application provides additional material from another manuscript tradition. There is also a list of the cast of heroes and villains with biographical data for the "real" ones and literary analogues for fictional characters. Chanson d'Antioche is now available to read for pleasure, but for a whole new perspective on a crusade in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
